Penang Food Must Tries

Penang is a food paradise, they have a lot of great street food, and almost every street you go, you will be able to find great street food. I've visited Penang many years back, but only recently did I manage to go again. My family is from Penang, I have relatives there, and that means that they were able to bring me to places that are maybe not as well known as the 'tourist' spots that many other blogs and websites recommend, but I can assure you that they are as good if not better than their more famous counterparts.

Chendul
A desert made with coconut milk, rice flour jelly, red beans, shaved ice and Gula Melaka(Palm Sugar)

1 of the most famous food in Penang is Chendul(Chendol), and the most famous places for Chendul in Penang will be Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul located at 27 & 29 Lebuh Keng Kwee, this place is ridiculously popular with tourists.

This place used to be that after you order, you have to stand around and eat, but now they have their own little place where you can sit and enjoy your bowl of chendul, in this little place you can also order food like oyster egg(which is actually really good), Penang laksa and otak-otak etc.
The Chendul itself however is only decent, the green jelly is not 'xiang'(fragrant) enough, and they put too little Gula Melaka. According to my family, this place used to be really good, but it has steadily worsen through the generations.

So where to go for a good bowl of Chendul? Well there are many places, there is a pretty decent one located at Lebuh Armenian in GeorgeTown,

But the one that we really enjoyed was the one in Batu Lanchang Pasar(Market). Their version of Chendul was fantastic. It was very fragrant and the taste was fantastic.

Since we are talking about Batu Lanchang Pasar, there are tons of good food here, but one of the most popular will be the Pasembur.

Pasembur
Pasembur is a indian salad and it contains sliced cucumber, turnip, bean sprouts, and some seafood.
This is a Chinese version of Pasembur,
there are other variants(indian), which will look to be something like this
(this cost us 35 ringgit!)

Absolutely loved the Pasembur that can be found in Batu Lanchang, so if you'd like to have a good and cheap one, that place will be the place to go.

Char Koay Teow
Char Koay Teow is basically stir fried flat rice noodles, typically with egg, cockles, and beansprouts.

We had lots of Char Koay Teow during the duration of our stay, basically every place we went, if we see it, we will order it. 1 of the most famous Char Koay Teow you can order is in Lorong Selamat, but my Aunt from Penang was adamant that this place was much better.
This is located at Wahong Cafe, Lorong Kampung Jawa, 11900 Bayan Baru, Penang, Malaysia. The Char Koay Teow was absolutely heavenly. They only open in the morning, so be sure to come early!

Loh Mee
Loh Mee is a noodle dish in thick starchy gravy, typically with egg and meat slices.

1 of the more popular places that you can have Lor Mee is at Kim Leng Loh Mee at Perak Road.

The Loh Mee here is fantastic, the gravy is flavorful and goes great with the chili. Just fantastic.
Kim Leng Loh Mee is located at Joo Huat Coffee Shop,

336-G1 Lintang Slim, off Jalan Perak, 11600 Penang.

Curry Mee
Noodles in Curry Sauce.

Curry Mee is a must try in Penang, and 1 of the best places to have Curry Mee is at 380A, Jalan Perak, 11600, Georgetown, Penang.
Doesn't really look like curry mee...
After mixing in the curry.

The Curry Mee here is fantastic, it has sotong, pig blood curd, fish cake and cockles. Just heavenly. At this same eatery, there is also a mixed curry rice stall, and talking to the locals eating there, their curry rice is also very popular, so you might want to try that too! We went to many places, I had so much curry mee in 3 days that it was almost scary, but this place was the best 1 we had.

Satay
Satay is a seasoned and skewered grilled meat dish.

There are many places that sells Satay in Penang, almost all food centers will have a stall selling Satay, but one of the best ones we had can be bought from Eaton Satay.
The difference between this satay and normal satay is that they BBQ the satay with the sauce, so when you eat it, it is already full seasoned. They only sell chicken satay, and it is moist, soft, and really tasty. So if you are looking for good satay, Eaton Satay will be a good place to start!
Eaton Satay is located at 110, Jalan Tan Sri Teh Ewe Lim, 11600, Penang.

Bak Kut Teh
Bak Kut Teh is a chinese herbal soup, typically served with pork ribs.

One of the most famous Bak Kut Teh in Penang is located at Gurney Drive,
and that is Carnation Bak Kut Teh.

(The waitress cut the pork leg before I could snap a picture!)

There is also another Bak Kut Teh stall right beside Carnation Bak Kut Teh.
Other Food that can be ordered here:
Brinjal(very tasty)
Bitter Gourd with Egg(This is super tasty)
 Fish Beehoon

Comparing the 2, Carnation Bak Kut Teh's soup is more herby, but they are both good, so you can try both and decide for yourself!
In the eatery where Carnation Bak Kut Teh is located, their Penang Laksa is also quite good, but I will not order the Hokkien Mee(Prawn Mee) from the same eatery.

Other Notable Mentions:
There are many other food in Penang that are must tries:

Assam Laksa

Oyster Egg

Char Koay Kak (Fried Carrot Cake)

Chee Cheong Fun

Popiah

Hokkien Mee(Prawn Mee)

Wantun Mee

Apom

Otak-Otak

Mee Goreng
(No picture available, we devoured the Mee Goreng so quickly I forgot to take any!)

There were also many other food that I wanted to try but didn't have time for, particularly,
Mee Udang and Nasi Kandar.

Sadly, we did not have time to go to all the best places, however I will definitely go back to Penang again, so this post will be updated when I am able to! Also if you know of good places for food in Penang, please comment and let me know!
(P.S, I didn't go to Gurney Drive Hawker center. Why? Because that place is a tourist attraction and food there is a hell lot more expensive than other places... and none of my relatives have anything good to say about that place.)

Thanks for reading and hope you enjoy yourself in Penang!
